Three Sails Boarded & Released, January 15th : Gosh, another great day on the water....We were very lucky, but also had a good Captain, Evan, and a good deckman, Wayne. we headed out in the morning with a great deal of excitement! It started off slow, but around ten in the morning, we got our first strike. Dianne was in the chair and after a twentyfive minute battle, brought the sail in, photographed and released. Then things really slowed down but around two pm the action really started. Over the next couple of hours, Ann boated a sail, and then Laurie boated one. At one time we had two on but lost one of them. There was another hooked but got away, There were three boated and released, two hooked but lost and three more raised to the surface. Lots of excitement and a great day.

An Afternoon in the Everglades, January 13, 2007 : Well today, people were coming and going. We stayed up rather late last evening and probably partied a little bit much. We decided to take an airboat ride in the Everglades, and, hopefully, get an afternoon fishing trip. However, we got a very, very, late start and got the Everglade's trip in, but not the fishing trip...Actually, it was a wonderful iintroduction to the Everglades. Not many of our group had ever been on an airport, gosh, they are noisy and we had to wear ear muffs. The guide we had was very nice and knowledgeable. We did not spend a lot of time because the cost for being on one of the things is about the same as flying from here to New York....We spent about an hour riding around and seeing lots of alligators and many birds of all types. The weather held up, but it was threatening all day. After a great trip, we headed off to Tao Tao, and had some great dim sum. Here are some pictures of our trip. You must remember that we are amateurs....but enjoy the best you can. The pictures here were made by Laurie, son in law, John Keown and old man, Cicero.

Wow, a double hookup of sails, , January 7th : Well, today was a day to remember always, two sails hooked up at the same time, a double hit, WOW! The seas were rough, 3-5, and the team had been fishing all day. In the afternoon, a thunderstorm came through but the Lady Laurie, with Captain Evan, worked itself around the storm and a strong cool wind came through. Right at that, something hit one of the kite baits, and Heather took up the fight, it turned out to be a bonita. Just about at the same time she was bringing in the bonita, a sail hit another kite bait, Heather grabbed that rod and the fight was on. Moments after, another sail hit another kite bait, Laurie grabbed that rod, and that fight was on. And what a fight it was keeping the lines separated with two sails on at the same time. Caroline was up top in the bridge with Evan and operated one of our cameras. You will see some great sail jumps in this series of pictures. John had another camera and got the close ups of the fights...A decision was made to bring Laurie's sail to the boat first because of its location, so Heather had to keep hers going while Laurie brought hers to boat side, and then released to fight again. Then the attention turned to Heather's sail and it was easy to see that hers was a really large Atlantic sail. She brought it to the boat and Wayne, our great deckman, brought it aboard so that pictures could be made. Enjoy them, probably too many, but gosh, we do not have this many opportunities to do or see this kind of action. While the number of pictures included might lead you to believe that the sail was out of the water for a long time, that is not the case. The cameas were blasting away at about five frames per second so the total time the sail was out of the water was less than about one minute. He was released unharmed for another fight another day...As I said before, WOW, what a day. We now have four sails on this trip.....and, hopefully, more are to come in the remaining days we will be in Fort Lauderdale. The time is passing much too quickly. Congratulations are in order to our fine Captain Evan Garner, to our great deckman, Wayne Luebe, and to our Lady Laurie fishing team, Heather & Laurie and to our photography team, Caroline & John.

Fishing on January 6th : The weather was projected to be a little rough for offshore fishing but we decided to try in any event so we headed out to sea. There are scenes here of us coming and going. The day turned out to be, in fact, a little rough but we ended up with two sharks, one a nice hammerhead that Heather caught, and two nice dolphin, so we have food. Heather was the lucky fisherman with the dolphin. We also caught and released a sea turtle....

January 4th Cruise around Fort Lauderdale : The weather was too windy to go sail fishing today so we decided to take the Lady Laurie, along with sufficient cocktail makings, and go for a cruise up the intercoastal waterway through Fort Lauderdale to see the sites. Wow, a lot of beautiful homes, and, of course, each beautiful home had to have a beautiful boat, or, I think they really call them "yachts". In any event, we had a very nice trip and did ejoying seeing what real money can buy...

December 26th, another sailfish day : Another beautiful day on the ocean, and Laurie was again successful in hooking, landing and releasing another sailfish. Today, we continued practicing using kites to bloat our bait. in additional to the nice sail, she also caught a bonita and a small dolphin.

Fort Lauderdale, December 25, Sail Fish day : On Christmas Morning, we left the dock early to try out our hand at fishing for a sailfish using a kite method of fishing. At this time of year, the only live bait available to us were pilchards and goggle eyes. Both of those bait attempt to swim straight down when placed in the water. As a result the fishermen in the area use kites to carry up a main line and then attach to it the fishing lines. The kite then holds the lines and bait on the surface of the water. . It takea a while to learn the procedure but works quite well. Someone has to be adjusting the lines at all times. We did fine to start with early in the morning, but then the wind laid down and there was nothing to take the kite up. We had taken a party ballon tank with us and filled a balloon with helium and attached to the kite. That worked for a while but ultimately was not enough lift. We trolled for a while trying to scare up a Wahoo to no avail. Thne the breeze picked up so we went back to flying the kite with three lines attached with two pilchards and one goggle eye aa bait. We about 1 PM, a sail hit the goggle eye then dropped back and tried to hit a pilchard but finally realized that he had been hooked by the goggle eye and the fight was on as you will see from the photographs.

Fort Lauderdale Vacation, December 23 : We spent most of the day still getting settled into the home we have rented here in Fort Lauderdale. Evan and Wayne continued to work on the Lady Laurie to get it ready after a few mechanical glitches. After having some great West Bay oysters for lunch, we headed out on a test run. Boat ran great and we got to see some of the local boating scenes. We went out at Port Everglades where many of the cruise ships originate. Gosh, those things are huge.
