Fishing on the Lady Laurie! Galleries

Grouper Fishing on the Lady Laurie, May 2, 2009 : The weather has not been very cooperative since the grouper season opened but the sea settled down on Saturday, May 2nd, so the team decided at the very last minute to make a grouper trip. While I did not go along, the team had a great trip, Laurie, Dianne, Ann, Will, Red, Evan, Jason & Robert. Brian did a great job as our deckhand, the first time he had been along in about a year. In any event, the catch was on from the moment of the first down, problem was that they were catching big red snappers on almost every down. Unfortunately, they are out of season until June 1st. All did what they could to release them unharmed, but that is hard to do when you are dragging them up from about 180 feet. The venting procedures were followed so, hopefully, no too much damage was done to them. Our fishing rules really make no sense whatsoever, Rule should be simple, either the fishery is open or it is closed, and that applies to commercial as well as recreational. When it is open, you should be alloted a certain number of fish of whatever size. You keep what you catch and go home. Seems so simple, it is just amazing that all of the so called brains and experts cannot figure it out.
In any event, a good time was had by all and they brought back some very nice gag grouper, red grouper, scamp, triggers, white snapper, bee liners, etc.

Grouper Fishing on the Lady Laurie, May 6, 2009 : The weather seemed as if it was going to be good for May 6th, so Laurie and I arranged for a fishing trip on the Lady Laurie for then. We planned to go further out to sea in an attempt to catch some grouper without hurting too manyRed Snappers which are everywhere now, but out of season..It as been hard to get down to the grouper as the snappers get the bait on the way down. We also decided that we would like to catch some amerjack but needed some fast running bait for that, for example what we call a blue runner or hardtail. Under the guidance of Captains Evan and Roger, we head out.

We decided to go out on the Miss Laurie the evening before to try to catch some blue runners. We caught about a half-dozen and then saw the bait boat out in the bay catching them as well. It seemed to us that a good idea would be to buy a few from him, which we did, and then met Evan with the Lady Laurie and transferred the blue runners to the bait well on the Lady Laurie.

Merv and Eleannor flew their plane up from Sarasota to join us for the venture. We had also invited Dianne and Roger, Ann, Red, Bob G, Renee and Dan B, all three could not join us. In any event, we took off from the dock about 5:20 am and headed about fifty miles off shore. We put out two high speed trollers. When we were out about twenty miles, we caught a very nice King Mackerel, and then, excitement hit. A nice Wahoo also was caught on the way out at about thirty five miles out.

We had a great day, ending up with 14 scamp, 9 amberjack, a kitty mitchell, a gag grouper and one king mackerel.
Thanks agaiin to Evan and Roger for getting us on the fish!

Dianne and Eleanor made most of the pictures as I had all sorts of troubles operating mine..

More later.
